Air in the Medical Marijuana Grow Room
Fresh air is essential in all gardens. It is extremely important that it be provided sufficiently, if you are growing medical grade marijuana.
You’ll need to ensure you have a fan, reflector and carbon filter. If you don’t have sealed reflectors, the circulation won’t work as well. It can be done without sealed reflectors, but it will only make your job harder.
You must have at least one passive intake. This could be as simple as a hole in the wall or your tent. Simply put, the passive intake is a way for air to pass into your grow area. As long as the exhaust is running, there won’t be an outflow of cannabis odor through the intake. Your intake should be one and a half times the exhaust size (i.e. 12″ exhaust = 18″ intake).
Air should have the ability to be evacuated from the grow room in 5 minutes. This translates into having a fan of at least 200 cubic feet per minute (400 feet per minute would be preferential) for a 1000 cubic foot room, which is 10′ x 10′ x 10′ grow room.
It is important to make sure the fresh air is not too cold or too hot. The ideal temperature should be between 72-76 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature can drop up to 10 degrees. If it drops more than 15 degrees, humidity and mold become threats. The air just can’t hold the moisture. A daytime temperature above 85 degrees Fahrenheit or below 55 degrees Fahrenheit can slow or altogether stop cannabis plant growth. Again, you’ll measure your humidity with a hygrometer. Ideally, you will have 50% humidity for flowering and 60-65% humidity for vegetation. In low humidity, plants transpire (breathe) faster and will require more water. In high humidity, the pressure outside the leaf will be too high. Due to this pressure, the plant won’t be able to absorb water through the roots.
The relative humidity is the ratio of moisture in the air to the greatest amount of moisture the air can hold at the same temperature. This increases at night. Seedlings do best in 60-70% humidity. Keep the humidity at or below 50% in the flowering room.
Lower humidity often equates with less disease and/or pests. A consistent and accurate humidity can allow for healthy even growth of your medical marijuana.
